Plain-English definitions for the terminology used across Coach's Corner.
- American odds
- Odds displayed as a positive or negative number; positive shows profit on a $100 bet, negative shows how much you must bet to win $100.
- Arbitrage
- The practice of placing bets on all possible outcomes of an event across different bookmakers to guarantee a profit regardless of the result.
- Asian Handicap
- A spread betting system that eliminates the draw by giving half or quarter goals to each team.
- Bankroll
- The total amount of money set aside for betting.
- Both Teams to Score (BTTS)
- A bet on whether each side will score at least one goal during the match.
- Cash out
- A feature that lets you settle a bet before the match ends, either locking in a profit or limiting a loss.
- Correct Score
- A bet that predicts the exact final score of a match.
- Decimal odds
- Odds expressed as a single number that includes the stake; multiply your stake by this number to calculate total payout.
- Double chance
- A bet that covers two of the three possible outcomes (home win or draw, away win or draw, etc.) in a single wager.
- Draw no bet
- A market where you pick a team to win; if the match ends in a draw, your stake is refunded.
- Fractional odds
- Odds shown as a fraction; the numerator indicates potential profit, the denominator the stake.
- Futures
- A bet placed on an event that will be decided in the future, such as who wins the World Cup.
- Half-time bet
- A wager placed on the outcome of only the first half of a match.
- Juice
- The commission a bookmaker charges on a bet, usually built into the odds, also called the vig.
- Live betting
- Placing bets on a match while it is already in progress, with odds that shift as the game unfolds.
- Moneyline
- A bet that picks the winner of a match, with odds shown as a positive or negative number.
- Odds
- The numerical expression of how likely an outcome is, indicating the potential payout relative to the stake.
- Over/Under
- A bet on whether the total combined score of a match will be higher or lower than a set number.
- Parlay
- A single bet that links multiple selections; all must win for the bet to pay out.
- Prop bet
- A side bet on a specific event within a match, like which player scores first.
- Spread
- The point advantage given to the underdog, used to level the betting field between two teams.
- Stake
- The amount of money you risk on a bet.
- Unit
- A standard measure of bet size, often a small percentage of your bankroll, used to manage risk.
- Value bet
- A wager where the odds offered are higher than the true probability of the outcome, giving an expected positive return.
